It is a machine that uses precisely targeted magnetic pulses similar to those used in MRIs. It stimulates key areas of the brain that are underactive in patients with depression. According to numerous studies, TMS results are far superior to medications for the treatment of depression, especially once a person has tried more than one antidepressant medication. TMS can also treat anxious depression and OCD!
*One benefit is that it is conducted right in the doctor’s office
*Patients are awake and alert during treatment
*Patients can go back to their normal activities immediately after treatment
*While there may be some minor discomfort at the treatment site (where the device touches your head), it generally subsides within the first week of treatment. There is no sedation, or impact on your alertness. You can read, watch TV, or talk with your treatment coordinator during your session, and you can drive home immediately after treatment.
*Treatment is administered 5 days a week for about 20 minutes, for approximately 7 weeks
